Negative of the Face Image on the Shroud
Notice three things in this facial image:
- The dark vertical bands on both
sides of the face at the edge of the eye socket . This is part
of the fabric's color and makes the face appear gaunt. Many
people interpret that the gaunt appearance is unrealistic.
- The white beard, mustache and
hair. This may be the result of amine and ammonia vapors
concentrating in the hair thus increasing chemical reaction with
saccharides. This along with the gaunt appearance has led some
people to say that the man appear European.
- The bright spot on the top of
the head (at the bottom of a bowl-shaped line) is from a water
stain giving the impression of top-lighting.
